BIOGRAPHY
Judge Norma Shepard Lindsey serves as a County Court Judge in Miami-Dade County. She was nominated to serve on the Court by the Eleventh Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission in October 2005, and was appointed by the Governor to the bench two months later. Since her appointment, Judge Lindsey has been assigned to the criminal division at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building where she presides over DUI, criminal traffic, and misdemeanor cases.
Prior to her appointment Judge Lindsey served from 2002 to 2005 as Associate General Counsel to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade County. Previously, Judge Lindsey volunteered with the Clubs, and she had been honored as its Volunteer of Year in 2001. As Associate General Counsel, Judge Lindsey was responsible for the day-to-day legal affairs of the Clubs, including corporate, tax, probate, employment, and child welfare issues. She also established and coordinated the Welcome to the Court Student Orientation Program in conjunction with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Judge Lindsey is also a former chairperson and member of the Judicial Nominating Commission for Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal, which she served from 2001 until her appointment to the bench. The Commission is responsible for screening, investigating, and nominating qualified individuals to the Governor for selection to the state appellate court for Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
In 2000, Judge Lindsey served as the Executive Director of Florida’s Growth Management Study Commission. From 1999-2000, Judge Lindsey was the Managing Director of Kelly Law Registry, the legal staffing division of Kelly Services, Inc. From 1993 through 1999, Judge Lindsey was in private practice focusing primarily on commercial litigation, securities and employment law, business torts and land use. As a practicing attorney, Judge Lindsey represented a diverse array of banks, brokerage firms, businesses and individuals in matters ranging from multi-million dollar complex commercial lawsuits to a pro bono appeal from a denial of an unemployment claim for wrongful termination from a fast-food restaurant. Based on the depth and variety of her background and experiences prior to taking the bench, Judge Lindsey understands and appreciates the issues facing the diverse community which she now serves.
Since her appointment to the bench, Judge Lindsey has remained involved with our community. She has served as a volunteer judge for the University of Miami School of Law Mock Trial Competition, the Southeastern United States Regional Black Law Students Association Mock Trial Competition, the American Bar Association, Section of Labor and Employment Student Trial Advocacy Program, the Johnson and Wales University Mock Trial Competition and the Florida International University Law School Moot Court Competition. Judge Lindsey also volunteered to participate in the Justice Teaching Program recently established by Florida Supreme Court Justice Fred Lewis.
Judge Lindsey is a member of the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. She is also a member of the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce, the Cuban American Bar Association, the Dade County Bar Association, the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Historical Society, the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association, the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce, and the University of Miami School of Law Dean’s Circle.
Judge Lindsey is the youngest of three children and the first lawyer in her family. She financed her undergraduate degree, in part, with a Track and Field scholarship and was self-supporting throughout law school. Her father served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II and was later stationed in Korea. Judge Lindsey’s sister is in banking, and her brother, who is a cancer survivor, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and spent a year stationed in Turkey. Judge Lindsey’s parents recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Judge Lindsey received her law degree from the University of Miami School of Law, graduating in 1993. She received her undergraduate degree from Marshall University, where she graduated with a B.B.A. in Economics, and served as the Captain of the Women’s Varsity Track Team. Judge Lindsey attended public schools from first grade through high school. She was the Commonwealth of Virginia’s AA high jump champion in both her junior and senior years of high school and was named Honorable Mention All American in Track and Field..
Judge Lindsey resides in Miami with her husband, Gene, and daughter, Cameron, and their dog, Max. She now seeks your support and will appear on the August 26, 2008 ballot for retention to Group 42.
